Adjustments
| Splits applied | none |
|---|---|
| Splits note | No split adjustment was applied. The Form 20-F already states its per-share figures as if the October 1, 2024 three-for-one split had taken effect at the start of the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024. SMFG's two-for-one split of common stock (record date September 30, 2026, effective October 1, 2026) came after every period in this record, and both filings print per-share amounts on the share count before that split; they are shown that way here. |
| ADR ratio | 0.6 |
| Per share basis | Per-share figures are stated in US dollars per American Depositary Share. The Form 20-F cover page states that each American Depositary Share represents 3/5 of one share of common stock (depositary: Citibank, N.A.), so each per-share amount the filings print has been multiplied by 0.6. Totals and share counts are as filed, in common shares. SMFG's Form 6-K of May 13, 2026 (accession 0001193125-26-220512) states that, with the two-for-one split, the ratio changes from 1 ADR : 0.6 common share to 1 ADR : 1.2 common shares, effective October 1, 2026 (U.S. EDT), so each ADS represents the same economic interest before and after the split and the per-ADS figures here, computed at 0.6 pre-split shares per ADS, remain valid per ADS. |
| FX | Every money figure is converted from Japanese yen to US dollars. FY2026 and FY2025 income-statement and cash flow figures use the average rates the Form 20-F states (¥150.67 and ¥152.62 per US$1.00), except cash and cash equivalents at the end of each fiscal year, a balance, which is converted at the rate on that year-end date. The filings state no other rate, so the remaining periods use the Federal Reserve's daily noon buying rates (FRED series DEXJPUS): the FY2024 average (about ¥144.51), the April-June averages for the quarters (about ¥159.36 in 2026 and ¥144.49 in 2025), and the rates on each balance sheet date (¥151.22 on March 29, 2024, the last rate before March 31, 2024, ¥149.90 at March 31, 2025, ¥159.08 at March 31, 2026 and ¥162.61 at June 30, 2026). Each period records the rate it was converted at under 'conversion'. |
Notes
- Two accounting bases. The fiscal-year figures come from the audited IFRS consolidated financial statements in SMFG's Form 20-F for the year ended March 31, 2026 (accession 0001193125-26-283871). The quarterly figures come from SMFG's Japanese GAAP consolidated financial results for the three months ended June 30, 2026, furnished on Form 6-K on July 31, 2026 (accession 0001193125-26-326659). The two bases measure many items differently, so quarterly figures should be compared with other quarters, not with the fiscal years. At March 31, 2026, for example, total assets were ¥309,203,641 million under IFRS and ¥328,511,145 million under Japanese GAAP, and shareholders' equity was ¥15,856,895 million and ¥15,785,457 million respectively.
- Fiscal calendar. SMFG's fiscal year ends March 31. This record labels each year by the calendar year in which it ends: FY2026 is the year ended March 31, 2026, and Q1 FY2027 is the three months ended June 30, 2026. SMFG's own Japanese results call the year ending March 31, 2027 "fiscal 2026".
- Exchange-rate effect. The yen was weaker against the dollar in the April-June 2026 quarter (about ¥159.36 per US$1.00 on average) than a year earlier (about ¥144.49), so growth measured in dollars is lower than in yen. Profit attributable to owners of parent rose 33.0% in yen (¥501,372 million against ¥376,898 million, as the 6-K reports) but about 20.6% in US dollars.
- What the quarterly report contains. SMFG states that quarterly consolidated statements of cash flows were not prepared for the three months ended June 30, 2026, so the quarters carry no cash flow figures; the depreciation and goodwill amortization the report discloses instead are shown under supplementary. The report's balance sheet compares June 30, 2026 with March 31, 2026, so the year-ago quarter carries income figures only, and the March 31, 2026 entry holds that Japanese GAAP balance sheet alone; no income figures for January-March 2026 are reported in these filings. The report states that the quarterly consolidated financial statements were not reviewed by the external auditor.
- Capital ratios for the quarter. The July 31, 2026 report said the June 30, 2026 capital ratios would be announced when fixed. They come from SMFG's Form 6-K of August 14, 2026 (accession 0001193125-26-350182), which reports consolidated BIS-guideline ratios at June 30, 2026 and March 31, 2026; the March 31, 2026 figures match those in the Form 20-F. The 20-F explains that these ratios are calculated under Japanese GAAP based on the Basel III rules, so they are a regulatory measure rather than an IFRS figure; the 20-F gives them for March 31, 2026 only.
- Quarterly line items. Ordinary income, ordinary expenses, ordinary profit, consolidated gross profit and consolidated net business profit are Japanese GAAP measures with no IFRS equivalent. Interest income, interest expense, fee and commission income and expense, general and administrative expenses, income taxes, profit and the split of profit come from the statements of income. Consolidated gross profit, net interest income, trust fees, net fees and commissions, net trading income, net other operating income, equity in gains of affiliates, consolidated net business profit, total credit cost and gains on stocks come from the consolidated operating results table in the supplementary information attached to the same 6-K. That table's net interest income for the quarter (¥791,890 million) is ¥1 million below interest income less interest expense on the statement of income (¥791,891 million), because amounts are rounded down; both are shown as printed. Total credit cost is negative when it is a net charge, as the filing prints it.
- Fiscal-year line items. Impairment charges on financial assets is the IFRS credit-loss charge and is shown as a positive expense, as the income statement prints it. From the year ended March 31, 2025 SMFG presents net gains (losses) on derecognition of financial assets at amortized cost as a separate line, and the 20-F restates the FY2024 comparatives for other income and other expenses to match. Net profit is split between shareholders of SMFG, non-controlling interests and holders of other equity instruments (perpetual subordinated bonds and borrowings that SMFG classifies as equity); earnings per share use the profit attributable to shareholders.
- Balance sheet definitions. Under Japanese GAAP, total_equity is "Total net assets", which includes non-controlling interests and stock acquisition rights, and shareholders_equity is the "Stockholders' equity" figure on the report's summary page (total stockholders' equity plus accumulated other comprehensive income). Under IFRS, total_equity also includes non-controlling interests and other equity instruments (¥2,252,846 million at March 31, 2026), and shareholders_equity is equity attributable to shareholders of SMFG. Loans are "Loans and bills discounted" under Japanese GAAP, with the reserve for possible loan losses shown separately, and "Loans and advances" as the IFRS statement of financial position prints them. The Japanese GAAP balance sheet shows negotiable certificates of deposit separately from deposits. The Japanese GAAP bonds line and the IFRS debt securities in issue line are kept under different names because they are not drawn up the same way. Cash is "Cash and due from banks" under Japanese GAAP and "Cash and deposits with banks" under IFRS.
- Share counts. Fiscal-year weighted-average basic and diluted share counts are the 20-F's figures, printed in thousands. The quarterly report gives only the average number of shares outstanding during the period, used for basic earnings per share, not a diluted share count. Shares issued and treasury shares are period-end counts; treasury shares include SMFG shares held by its stock grant trust for employees. Treasury shares rose from 10,632,119 at March 31, 2026 to 29,290,201 at June 30, 2026.
- Dividends. The fiscal-year dividends_per_share_recognized is the dividend per share SMFG recognized during each fiscal year, as the 20-F reports it (¥140 in FY2026, ¥105 in FY2025 and ¥87 in FY2024, per common share). The dividends declared in respect of the year ended March 31, 2026 were ¥157 per share (¥78 interim and ¥79 year-end), and the forecast for the year ending March 31, 2027 is ¥180 per share on the share count before the October 2026 split (¥90 interim and ¥90 year-end, or ¥45 year-end after the split). SMFG's forecast of profit attributable to owners of parent for the year ending March 31, 2027 is ¥1,700,000 million under Japanese GAAP, unchanged.
- Asset quality. Non-performing loans are SMFG's consolidated loans disclosed under the Banking Act and the Reconstruction Act (Japanese GAAP, in billions of yen); the NPL ratio is those loans as a percentage of the total including normal assets.
- Changes in the quarter. SMFG reports that from April 1, 2026 it applied revised Japanese accounting standards for financial instruments and consolidated financial statements, with no material impact, that JRI Holdings, Limited ceased to be a material consolidated subsidiary, and that no prior figures were restated.
- Periods not presented. For a first fiscal quarter the year-to-date period is the quarter itself, so no separate year-to-date block is given. No trailing-twelve-month figures are given, because the fiscal years here are IFRS and the quarters are Japanese GAAP, and adding one to the other would not produce a meaningful total. The FY2024 entry has no balance sheet because the 20-F's statements of financial position cover March 31, 2026 and 2025 only.
Uncertainties
- The quarterly report and the 20-F state no exchange rate for the quarters, for FY2024 or for any balance sheet date, so those periods are converted at Federal Reserve rates rather than a rate SMFG published; SMFG's own translation, had it published one, could differ slightly.
- Per-ADS figures use the ratio on the Form 20-F cover (one ADS represents 3/5 of one common share), which applies to the share count before the October 1, 2026 two-for-one split, the basis on which every per-share figure here is printed. The company has announced that from October 1, 2026 each ADS will represent 1.2 common shares, so per-ADS amounts are unaffected by the split (May 13, 2026 Form 6-K, accession 0001193125-26-220512).
- These filings do not reconcile the quarter's Japanese GAAP results to IFRS, so how the quarter would read on the basis used for the fiscal years cannot be determined from them.

How this page was built
This page was built from four of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc.'s own filings with the SEC, read one at a time. Nothing on it is taken from a pre-tagged dataset, a data vendor or another website. The figures are on the company's own fiscal calendar and in actual dollars, as the filings report them. Where the filings do not support a figure, the record says so instead of reporting a zero; this period names three such gaps.
A single company files thousands of pages with the SEC in a year, and no two companies file them the same way, so the reading and the assembly here are done by AI rather than by rules that break on the differences. Every pass is then audited back against the filings it came from before the page is published, and anything the filings do not support is left out and named rather than filled in. AI can still make mistakes. That is why the accession numbers are printed: the filing is the authority, and this page is a route to it.
